About Me

Priscila Soares

For the longest time, I felt lonely in my own struggles. I had to loose myself completely in order to find my true self again. I reconnected with my inner child after many years of pretending she wasn't quite there.

As a mother of 2 sons, and as a person with a severe hearing difference on a spiritual path of inner exploration, I became passionate about sharing my personal journey and message through my art.

I wish to inspire you to look into your own limiting beliefs about who you truly are and to feel encouraged and supported to break through them.

We are all unique and our stories matter, regardless of what type of past experiences we are still attached to.

Mission statement

How living in the world of hearing loss and embracing who I really am inspired me to bring our powerful stories into the art that I create today.

I Feel Lucky - the inspiration behind adding wings to the ears

At first, I created a platform I called MyLuckyEars to share my art related to hearing loss. It was a collection of people's stories and experiences expressed through different mixed media mediums. It started almost as therapy. As a way to process so many feelings I had bottled up inside of me that I didn't even quite know they existed. MyLuckyEars was about honoring all the years and the ears on a hearing difference journey. In order to visually demonstrate how I felt, I began adding wings on the ears of my portraits so they could be liberated. I felt as if I was giving a visibility to an invisible disability. I was artistically saying:

"This is a part of who I am but I'm not defined by it."

Everything I’ve been through with my hearing difference and my son’s deafness have set me on a road of a deeply passionate desire to learn all things related to our hearing. I love to share other people's experiences with their own hearing loss in a way of honoring who they truly are. I want to connect with adults and children who are deaf, or hard of hearing. I have had so many phases of hearing that I can say I've experienced the difference between 100% natural hearing, hearing with only one ear, or hearing with a hearing aid or a BAHA. I’ve felt what it’s like to have your hearing restored for a few minutes, but then finding out that those few minutes are really all you’re going to get. I have gone through one of the most difficult decisions of my life: choosing between allowing my son to get a Cochlear Implant or not. I have felt denial, sadness, hope, courage and strength. I have begged and cried for help and thanked the ones who crossed my path and gave me support. At the same time, I felt encouraged when my experiences were able to help the lives of others who were going through similar journeys.

My hearing difference doesn’t define me, but it is a part of me; even more so, it empowers me. The path I’ve taken has been nothing short of a novel and I love every year of it, every ear of it. These are MyLuckyEars.

Techniques

My work is connected through its underlying theme, but I freely explore different mediums.

I paint with materials such as acrylics, watercolors, pastels and even digitally. Sometimes, I work with photography and digital manipulation. I sculpt in cold porcelain clay as well as wet clay, paper mache, resin casting, silicone casting and various other mixed media materials. I also create puppets and dolls and stop-motion animation characters. I have even built a wheelchair dinosaur costume for a kid once. See my art collection:

Background

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, I’m an artist of many mediums. My background in Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Photography and Motion Picture combined with my passion for Graphic Novels and the desire to tell a story, allows me to experiment with different processes and bring it all together into my artwork.

I graduated with an Associates Degree in Art Education from the Faculdade Belas Artes in São Paulo and an Associates Degree in Video Editing Motion Picture from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with  The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
