Learn how to make the best Cold Porcelain Clay Recipe I’ve ever had. After many years of trying to make this clay from scratch and having very frustrating results, I finally figured out what makes it last, not crack, and have the best results. I'll tell you, the secret is in the type of glue.
I alway knew you're supposed to use White PVA wood glue, and even though Elmer's glue claims to be it, there was something about its ingredients that made it a really undesirable to work with. Then Elmer’s changed something in its formula and the recipe became impossible to use. It just cracked the clay every single time I attempted to sculpt anything. At that time I wasn’t sure it was really the glue that was causing the issue, so I tried many different recipes variations and different types of glue and none of them were successful. I got so frustrated that I gave up on the clay for over two years.
Then one day I decided to give my research one other try. Many people in other parts of the world were making this clay without any problems. I realized then that the issue was the lack of good quality white PVA wood glue to purchase in the US. All the brands I’d purchased wouldn’t do the job. Forget trying to find it at your local art store or hardware store. Then one day I came across this one lady that was using this white glue for making frames from Lineco. I had never heard of the brand before, but it was worth a try. I decided to purchase a small amount online and was so pleased to find out that the clay worked so beautifully well! No more cracking, no more issues with it not staying in place, no more brittle clay! I even used it on a really large sculpting piece and it worked just the way it’s supposed to!
Sieve the cornstarch into the pan and add the white glue. Mix well until uniform.
Add then the mineral oil, the white vinegar snd there water and mix well again.
Bring it to a medium fire and keep mixing until the dough begins to release from the walls of your pan. remove it from the fire.
Let it rest for about 20mins to let it cool a bit. Knead the dough really well, careful to not burn your hands. This step should be done before the clay cools off completely, but not too hot that you’d burn your hands while kneading.
Seal the clay with plastic film while not in use to keep it from drying. If not using for a while, also put it on an opaque dark plastic bag and keep it in your refrigerator. Should last a few weeks that way.
Enjoy!
