I wanted to do something unique on this painting that would tell more about her story instead of just a portrait. In order for Helen Keller to understand others better, she used a method known as Tadoma, where she would place her hand on a person's face, touching their throat, jaw, lips and under the eyes to feel speech movements. On this painting, you see Helen Keller doing the Tadoma on herself instead of someone else, as if with that she gets to connect with her own sounds in a deeper way. The portrait is meant to convey her intelligence, courage and compassion.
There's also a version of this painting without her name on it: See it here.
